Bronwyn Myers, PhD is the Deputy Director of the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit at the South African Medical Research Council. She is a licensed psychologist and a Professor in the Division of Addiction Psychiatry, in the University of Cape Town’s Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health. For more than 15 years, Dr. Myers has conducted clinical research focused on the development, testing, and implementation of psychological interventions to treat substance use and co-occurring mental disorders and end the HIV epidemic in South Africa.
Her work includes community research to improve HIV prevention programming for vulnerable populations who use substances and research to improve engagement in the HIV care cascade for people living with HIV who use substances. Her work has a strong service user and workforce development focus. Dr. Myers previously served as the Secretariat to the International Reference Group to the United Nations on HIV and Injecting Drug Use. She has published more than 180 peer-reviewed journal articles- largely on addressing the intersection of HIV, mental health, and substance use.
