HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) leadership congratulates Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo on her selection as director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). Dr. Marrazzo is currently the Division of Infectious Diseases director at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. In addition to her many other roles, she also chairs the HPTN Biomedical Working Group, tasked with integrating the Network's biomedical science agenda across numerous clinical trials of antiretroviral prevention agents.
"On behalf of the HPTN, we welcome Dr. Marrazzo to her new role and look forward to working under her leadership as we continue investigating HIV prevention tools and strategies," said Dr. Myron Cohen, HPTN principal investigator, and director of the Institute for Global Health at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
NIAID has funded the HPTN since the Network's formation in 1999. The HPTN's roots began with the establishment of the HIV Network for Prevention Trials (HIVNET) in 1993, also supported by NIAID.
Research from the HPTN in the U.S. and around the world has contributed to ground-breaking advancements in HIV prevention, such as initiating early antiretroviral therapy to prevent HIV transmission (U=U), a long-acting antiretroviral (cabotegravir) to prevent HIV acquisition and identification of antivirals for prevention of mother-to-child transmission in resource-limited settings.
"Dr. Marrazzo is an accomplished educator and scholar, with extensive research experience in HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, with a special focus on women's health," said Dr. Wafaa El-Sadr, HPTN principal investigator, director of ICAP, and professor of epidemiology and medicine at Columbia University in New York. "We are confident that Dr. Marrazzo's experience and expertise will serve to advance the research mission of NIAID."
