We were sad to learn of the untimely death of Dr. Mark Wainberg, an internationally renowned researcher in the field of HIV/AIDS, past-president of the International AIDS Society (IAS), and former chair of the HPTN Biomedical Sciences Committee. Mark was instrumental in the founding of the Canadian Association for HIV Research and was among the first in the world to identify the problem of HIV drug resistance. He was particularly known for his 1989 collaboration with BioChem Pharma Inc. in the initial identification of 3TC as an anti viral drug. In recognition for his many achievements, Mark was awarded the Order of Canada in 2001, the Order of Quebec in 2005, and was named a Chevalier of France’s Légion d’honneur in 2008.
We are sharing this special message from the IAS as it pays tribute to Mark’s many contributions to HIV research, advocacy, and scientific advancement: Mark Wainberg IAS
